Project Egress was a collaborative maker project organized around the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 in 2019, in which Adam Savage teamed up with the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum to reverse-engineer and build a life-size replica of the Apollo 11 command module hatch. Using 3D scans from the Smithsonian and archival engineering drawings, the hatch was digitally modeled, split into component parts, and sent to more than 40 makers and fabrication shops across the U.S. to produce individual assemblies in a variety of materials and techniques.
